Is Antibacterial Soap Safe?

The FDA is currently evaluating the question of whether or not antibacterial soap is safe. Soaps containing antibacterial ingredients like Triclosan have been around for more than four decades. The science indeed indicates that the chemicals in these soaps can alter the hormonal balances in animals. Studies have shown that triclosan can be harmful to our immune system. Additionally, the cause for alarm concerning the possibility of antibacterial chemicals contributing to the development of super bugs resistance is real. Does that mean you should throw away all your antibacterial liquid, bars and body washes? Let’s look at this way. The casual once in a while use of antibacterial soap in low doses may be okay. That’s to be determined. However, if you are prone to getting skin infections like ringworm, jock itch, or impetigo and are using antibacterial soap as a preventative, there are disadvantages of antibacterial soap. There are natural alternatives that are just as, if not more powerful at mitigating bacterial, fungal or viral outbreaks without any evidence of harming our immunological systems, the environment or causing antibacterial resistance. So the answer to the question, “ Is Antibacterial Soap Safe?” may be that the antibacterial alternative to using triclosan is safer.
