The History of Tea Tree Oil in the New World

A brief history of tea tree oil in the new world.
1732 - Tea Tree Oil first came to the attention of Western Society in 1732 when Captain James Cook made his famous trip around the world. When they landed in Australia, Captain Cook brewed a spicy and refreshing tea from the leaves of the Melaleuca Alternifolia tree thus naming it the "Tea Tree." It was used extensively until Penicillin was invented.

1769 - It was first called Tea Tree by the expedition of caption Cook and Banks which identified the plant and established it's use when moored off the Purangi River in Mercury Bay in 1769. New Zealand Coromandel Mountains Tea Tree Oil Company Limited, also in Mercury Bay, extracts the oil from naturally occurring unsprayed or cultivated plants by a natural process that does not involve crushing or heat treatment.

1770 - In 1770 when Captain Cook’s South Sea expedition arrived at New South Wales the sailors used the leaves to brew a tea leading to the origin of the name Tea Tree although the usual source of tea is the Camellia species, of which this tree is no relation. As this is the only place it grows the export of the oil is now big business in Oz, with them now exporting 700 tonnes annually. Originally the leaves of the tree were lucked by the aboriginals as they found them effective in treating skin infections. In 1770 when Captain Cook’s South Sea expedition arrived at New South Wales the sailors used the leaves to brew a tea leading to the origin of the name Tea Tree although the usual source of tea is the Camellia species.

1770 - Back in 1770...James Cook traveled to Australia and met with the aboriginies and they shared their healing methods using this tree.
