Side effects related to the use of antibacterial soaps containing Triclosan:
- Triclosan is technically a pesticide and now under review by the EPA and the FDA.
- The Canadian Medical Association has called for a ban on the use of Triclosan in household products. Triclosan is highly toxic to algae, invertebrates, fish, and frogs.
- Triclosan breaks down into dioxins. It will react with chlorine to make chloroform under certain conditions.
- Liver and inhalation toxicity has been linked to Triclosan. Only low levels of Triclosan are required to disrupt thyroid functions.
- Studies have also shown that it is not effectively filtered out during wastewater treatment. Triclosan is found in lakes, sediments, and rivers throughout the world.
- Triclosan can disrupt the thyroid hormone system, which affects proper growth and development, particularly for the brain and in utero.
- In August 2012, a report demonstrated Triclosan’s adverse effect on heart functions in mice and fish.
