Cleaning with Hypochlorous Acid

What is hypochlorous acid and what does it do?

When most people hear hypochlorous acid, they assume this is some sort of scary, harsh chemical that can burn your skin instantly and destroy anything in its path. In reality, hypochlorous acid is a naturally occurring chemical that is produced by our white blood cells. It has the ability to fight dangerous bacteria and viruses, specifically at the site of a wound or infection. This process promotes proper healing by not affecting the fragile cells required to heal our body while killing invading bacteria and viruses that could harm us. It is for this reason that hypochlorous acid has been used in wound care, eye care, tattoo healing, and pet care. It has been around for years and is trusted as a disinfectant in schools and hospitals because of its powerful ability to kill almost all harmful bacteria while still being safe to the human body. In fact, it is so safe, that is used to clean and disinfect the area used for breastfeeding for the safety of an infant.

Hypochlorous acid is becoming increasingly more popular as companies educate the market on all its benefits. Additionally, hypochlorous acid is a natural cleaner and disinfectant, which means there is virtually no risk of allergic reaction and no antibiotic resistance. In clinical studies, it has outperformed the top national brands and products and can effectively replace bleach, multipurpose cleaners, bath and tile cleaners, glass cleaners, and even carpet cleaners. It is an FDA approved chemical for use as a food disinfectant, USDA approved for use in organic crop production, and effectively kills 99.9% of bacteria. To state plainly what we’ve said a handful of times: hypochlorous is an extremely powerful cleaner and disinfectant with no toxic chemicals whatsoever.

If it’s so great, why haven’t I heard of it and why don’t more people use it?

Hypochlorous acid has been used for decades but its extremely short shelf of just hours made it extremely expensive and unattractive to medical professionals, let alone consumers. Advancements in chemical manufacturing have allowed for a stable product with a much longer shelf life. The integrity and power of the hypochlorous acid has remained intact, but it now can be produced far cheaper and last longer, making its appeal to the masses grow. Even global companies in the cleaning world are starting to recognize this shift and adapt accordingly. Additionally, more products are coming to the market that allow consumers to “make” hypochlorous acid and use what they need in both tablet and pouch form and adding it to water. This was something that wasn’t possible years ago and has played a big part in the increased use of hypochlorous acid.

Defense Soap gets in the hypochlorous game

A little over two years ago, we met with a company that educated us on all the benefits of hypochlorous acid. We were blown away at some of the statistics that we were presented with and decided to make the jump into that market with our antimicrobial skin cleanser. As a natural hygiene products company, we were attracted to the idea that our body produces this chemical naturally and came with an EPA approved distinction. The feedback we’ve gotten on our antimicrobial spray has been phenomenal and was the driving force behind creating a solution for wrestling room and mat cleaning and disinfecting.

We use the same properties of hypochlorous acid in our new disinfectant, just in a higher concentration than we do with our skin cleanser. It comes in a convenient tablet form that you drop into a sprayer and apply so there is no guess work with mixing harsh chemicals. We’ve also established a relationship with Victory Innovations and are a distributor of their award-winning cordless electrostatic sprayers in the wrestling community.

We’re very excited and proud to introduce this to the market at a cost significantly cheaper than what other companies have been providing it at. We felt a responsibility to provide coaches and programs with a great product at a fair and affordable price. Our new mat and room cleaner and disinfectant are now available for purchase and we would welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you may have and educate the market on how affordable, effective, and safe this new solution really is.
